gymmotivation Following yesterday's post about energy balance, let's take a closer look at the 'energy out' side of the equation .

The energy you use in a day is known as your “Total Daily Energy Expenditure” or TDEE for short .

TDEE is different for everyone depending on your age, weight, height, sex, and how active you are both in your job and in your leisure time .

There are 4 different elements that go together to make up your TDEE or “energy out”. The biggest one is BMR: Basal Metabolic Rate .

The second element is TEF: Thermic Effect of Food. This is the energy it takes to digest and metabolise what you eat. It accounts for around 10% for your TDEE. This is a relatively small element, and there is very little you can do to influence it .

Bur there are 2 more factors left that we definitely can and should try to influence .

EAT: Exercise Activity Thermogenesis, aka planned exercise. The gym. Working out at home. Doing a class. Going for a run, a swim, a long walk .

People tend to vastly over estimate how much energy they use during exercise. Even fitness trackers are notoriously inaccurate by 20-50%. In fact, EAT accounts for only around 5% percent of our TDEE. When you consider that 4 hours in the gym accounts for less than 2.5% of our week, you can see why it is difficult to create a calorie deficit via EAT alone .

And finally NEAT: Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. All the rest of your movement that is NOT planned exercise. Standing, taking the stairs, shuffling, fidgeting, moving around the kitchen when you cook a meal. This accounts for around 15% of your ‘energy out’ – three times as much as planned exercise .

Building new habits that increase your NEAT will be a massive boost to your fat-loss efforts. Do not underestimate how much of a difference it can make .
