governed by expression + her unbridled curiosity, she greets each day with anticipation. eager to take on new roads with her childlike wonder.
your first kiss. the scent of lavender. she is twirling under the mother moon in crimson heels. a forget-me-not. an open palm reaching. she tucks away these treasured moments in her back pocket for safe keeping.
she teaches us that when we do not explore different views, we deny ourselves the richness of growth + experience.
so she chooses to answer the call for adventure and wander off into the open wilderness. the rebellion just outside the lines of what everyone else is doing.
the unknown is where she comes alive.
her courage illuminates her own trails.

this quarter’s give-it-forward is @gyrlwonder.
Gyrl Wonder acts as a catalyst, giving rise to ambitious gyrls and young women between the ages of 16-21. they provide and cultivate resources while teaching them how to leverage these tools to facilitate their personal and professional goals.
The Gyrl Wonder program works on five essential pillars which include: self care, self-image, empowerment, development and service. these topics help begin their journey from within and continue to help the community around them. with the help from mentors at Gyrl Wonder, they learn how to take care of their spiritual and physical selves, as well as think positively about themselves.
“young women are the vehicles of hope for our futures and it is up to us to ensure that our gyrls are certain of what they can accomplish individually and collectively and that every dream can be conquered.” — Gyrl Wonder
every quarter i make a donation from my book royalties to organizations that lift and empower the stories of women. if you would like to hear more about @gyrlwonder, learn more about their programs or offer support to their efforts, please visit the link in my stories or www.gyrlwonder.org.

you were heavy. and i needed you to be. i needed you to weigh me down into the ground so hard that i was forced to let go of some things.
expectations. loss. planned futures. the pain that harbors underneath my left shoulder blade where i keep my heartbreak alive + well with me.
transformation is a dark muddy river that isn’t breezily navigated. all we can do is keep putting one foot in front of the other, out into the unknown, and hope that our feet are grounded enough to catch ourselves when we fall.
letting go isn’t something we can sail through like clear waters. it isn’t something we can shame into a small existence. it isn’t ignoring. shoving aside. or repeating the lyrics “it doesn’t matter, i am just fine.” i quit telling myself that story, so i went out and wrote a new one.
instead, i choose the story of being.
to be with myself.
because, oh. sometimes do i want to run.
i choose to be.
and, it’s when i honor this pain. when i give it the room to breath and simply be, that’s the moment i invite love to be, too.
