Yessss‼️ Pathology results showed clear margins and I won’t need any more surgery. I can finally BREATHE! And just for clarity, no I did not look this happy directly after waking up from anesthesia 😆
I need a few weeks to heal as they had to reopen the first incision 😬 but then I can move on to radiation to finish up my treatment plan....finally! There are parts of this process (hormone therapy) that will continue for years, but I’m so incredibly happy that I’ve got the tough stuff behind me. .
Thank you to my nurse and best friend @rmadelmayer for taking care of me post surgery. Sometimes I still can’t believe everything we’ve gone through this year. #myrock
This disease is relentless😞
Turns out that somehow, after two surgeries, I still don’t have clear margins. My surgeon initially thought everything looked good, but after further examination of the slides they realized there is an area of concern. Not only that, but my body has decided to reject the dissolvable stitches and caused an infected 😬so I’ve been dealing with a lot of unanticipated issues these past two weeks. We have some big decisions now as I will be deciding between a third lumpectomy, a mastectomy, or moving on to radiation. I’m getting second opinions this week and hope that I can find a solution I feel good about. .
I’m so thankful that before all hell broke loose, Rob and I were able to enjoy a weekend away ✨ We jetted down to LA to visit our friend Jake (and Frank, Neil, and Jay)! It was sooo much fun! Everything ‘cancer’ was on the back burner and we just thoroughly enjoyed every moment! I’m looking forward to more times like these after treatment 💖

I grew up really looking up to my aunt Connee. When I was young, she lived in Chicago, which made her one of my only “big city” relatives. When she’d come home to visit, she’d tell stories about tall buildings, theater performances, and delicious dishes at fabulous restaurants. While she has never loved to cook, she adores good food. I sometimes try to channel her when I describe flavors-she could always say things in a way that really made you want to eat them. Eventually, she moved back to Kansas City. During these years, my mom and I would visit to spend the day with her-visits I adored + looked forward to so much.✨
Fast forward to one scary October, when Connee was diagnosed with breast cancer. She faced some incredible difficulties during her treatment: infections and subsequent illness, side effects. Once, after a round of chemo, she tripped and fell - but was feeling so weak, she couldn’t catch herself. She walked in the door at thanksgiving that year wearing sunglasses. I remember her standing in the doorway + shouting to all the kids “Hey guys, I’m celebrating Halloween late this year!” as she whipped off her glasses to reveal two big black eyes from the fall.🕶
That moment perfectly sums up why I admire her, as does her entire journey with breast cancer. She didn’t let a difficult diagnosis, a difficult treatment, or a difficult recovery defeat her. She turned a horrible accident into the perfect entrance. She maintained her sense of humor and sense of self, and both aided her as she fought... hard. That was 15 years ago. Fast forward again to a celebratory October, where she was officially told that she was in remission. Every October since, I have sent her a package of goodies, because I’m still celebrating the remission, Connee, and all the inspiration she has given me.🌸
This year, as a proud ambassador for @komengreaternyc - I want to celebrate her by walking in the #raceforthecure2019 on September 8th. If you’d like to join the fight to end breast cancer, please head to the link in my profile. You can join my team (come walk with me!), or make a donation towards my fundraising goal. Together we can work on @creatingmoresurvivors ❤

@nbcfaus is partnering with @curebraincancer in a bid to connect the dots between breast and brain cancer. As part of this collaboration, NBCF-funded researcher Associate Professor Pilar Blancafort will investigate a new treatment based on gene editing technology for brain cancer and metastatic breast cancer that will focus on cancers that are highly resistant to existing treatments. It’s been a while, time for an update!
These past 2 months had many ups and downs, especially downs. But this last week feels different. I’m feeling better, mentally and physically and I’m starting to feel like myself again. Not all the time, but it’s certainly improving.
The results of the MRI were good. The tumor is not visible anymore and the size of my lymph nodes are back to normal. Because of this I had my last chemo on the 17th of june and my operation (breast saving) is planned for the 31st of july.
I try not to look too far ahead. Step by step, I’ll face it when I get there. I still have a long way to go (operation, immunotherapy, radiation therapy and hormone therapy). However, I really believe that the worst part is behind me and it will only get better from now on!
